Mark Hallock on Church Revitalization

One does not have to look far to face the alarming problem of evangelical Christian churches that are declining. “A large portion of traditional and established churches face severe stagnation. In the U.S., roughly 70% of churches have an attendance of fewer than 100 people, and many older congregations are at a real risk of closing their doors permanently.” [1]

For example, According to Lifeway Research and the Southern Baptist Convention’s Annual Church Profile data, 715 Southern Baptist churches disbanded or closed in 2024.[2]

The Unstuck Group defines church revitalization as “the intentional, long-term process of transforming a plateaued, declining, or aging congregation into a spiritually healthy, mission-focused, and outwardly impactful body of believers.”[3]
